Former Barcelona executive: Barcelona’s loss last season should have been 180 million euros, not 90 million euros

In an interview with the program, Jaime Guardiola, the former chairman of Barcelona’s Economic Committee and a famous economist, gave an in-depth analysis of the current situation of the club and made sharp criticism of the management of the current board of directors.

What do you think of Barcelona’s current management?

I think Barcelona needs a replacement, a change brought about by a new generation of directors. We must abandon the improvised management style. Fonte has all the conditions to lead this revolution because he is an independent person who can devote all his time to Barcelona and he has the corresponding talents and experience. Laporta has been around for a long time and it is now clear that the club needs a change.

How do you differentiate between a club’s performance at a competitive level and an institutional level?

The club is not running well. The first team performed well but while many fans only care about results, members do take an interest in the good running and management of the club.

You once served as Chairman of Barcelona’s Economic Committee. What was that experience like?

I voted for Victor Fonte at the time, but I accepted the invitation to chair the Economic Committee in 2021, just as I would have done if Fonte or Fresa were elected. At the time I saw him betting on Ferran Revert and Mateu Alemany to let the professionals take charge, but that didn't last.

What are your expectations for the upcoming Member Congress? Especially regarding account approval.

The accounts will be approved. Not approving the accounts could land the club in major trouble. However, one thing that strikes me as deceptive is that the approved accounts last season showed a loss of €90 million, but now that the figures have been recalculated, they should actually explain the loss as €180 million. This is deception.

What are your predictions for the financial situation of the current board of directors after the term of office ends?

I predict that this board of directors will end up losing money. That being said, I would not be in favor of a future board taking action to hold the current board accountable. I think the club will have to take on these debts.

Are you worried about the financing of the new Barcelona space project?

I am concerned about this. I think when the Camp Nou is fully completed in 2028, in addition to the €1.5 billion borrowed for the project, we will have paid an additional €500 million in interest. In addition, I also find it strange that the 360-degree surround scoreboard is missing from the new Camp Nou project.
