After Jota died in a car accident, Portuguese coach Fonseca, who once coached him, updated social media and expressed his grief.

Fonseca wrote: "Today is a sad day. My thoughts are with Diogo's family."

Fonseca was the head coach of Portuguese Super League team Ferreira in the 2014/15 season, and Jota also played for Ferreira's first team from 2014 to 2016, completing his career debut under Ferreira.
