Marseille Chairman: There is no regret to let Rabiot go, and he acts according to principles and sleeps sweetly
Marseille chairman Longoria once again talked about Rabiot's departure, and he expressed no regrets about the decision.
Marseille president Pablo Longoria once again talked about Adrian Rabiot's departure in an interview with Le Provence, insisting that he had "no regrets" even though the midfielder's departure this summer brought turmoil to the club. On the eve of Marseille's approaching trip to Real Madrid for the Champions League, Longoria admitted that the unexpected departure of the French international forced the club to change its strategy in the final weeks of the transfer window.
"When you firmly believe that the club must have a clear structure and respect decisions, there will be no regrets," Longoria explained. "This situation itself is regrettable because no one wants to go to an irreversible point, especially for such an important player. But when you act according to principles, you can sleep with peace of mind."
Rabiot's departure came after his mother and agent Veronico publicly criticized Longoria and sports director Medi Benatia, a landmark event in Marseille this summer. The Spanish described the matter as "absurd" from the outside world, but insisted that he had always been prepared.
"The original plan is of course to retain players. But once things change, we have to think about how to stay competitive in the Champions League. This means finding new midfielders and improving the level of defense."
These new faces played a major role in Marseille's 4-0 victory over Lorient last weekend, with Benjamin Paval and Nef Agde doing well in their respective debuts. Next, Marseille will head to Madrid to face the severe test of the Champions League, and will then face Paris Saint-Germain this weekend.
