Spalletti: We still need to improve but I have confidence in the team and the atmosphere at Juventus’ home ground is great

In the fourth round of the Champions League early this morning, Juventus drew 1-1 at home with Sporting CP. After the game, Juventus coach Spalletti accepted an interview with Sky Sports.

How did you evaluate the competition? Are you disappointed that you didn't win?

Yes. The opponent is a very good team with very good ball control and a fierce attack. The start was difficult but then we reacted and maybe we should have taken the lead. We lost too much possession and the game was a bit chaotic. We didn't organize our offense very well in the early stages, but overall the team performed well. I have confidence in the team because we have players with strong abilities and excellent skills who can have a decisive impact in the game. We still need to improve in terms of playmaking and passing speed, but offensively we have a lot of solutions.

What do you think of the three-forward tactic?

There is a risk that the opponent will push you back into their own half when they have possession of the ball, and they are good at passing the ball in tight spaces. We did a good job of breaking up passes and counterattacking well. But we also gave our opponents too many chances and had to do our best to regain the ball. I think my team is very strong and if we continue to maintain this spirit, the games will become more interesting.

The pace of domestic competition in Italy is relatively slow. Will this affect your performance against faster opponents?

Obviously, pass speed is one of the key factors, but there are many other factors in the game. For example, sometimes you need to keep the ball, and sometimes you need to press and regain the ball in the opponent's half. You need to learn to choose what to do at key moments in a game and then more quickly decipher the best option in each situation.

This is your first home game as coach of Juventus. How do you evaluate the team’s home atmosphere?

This is a very beautiful scene, the stadium is full of seats. This feeling of being all around the field creates a great atmosphere and the players feel it too. Although we still have room for improvement, as long as we all work together, we can gain a lot of satisfaction.
